Nike originated in 1964 under its former name Blue Ribbon Sports. It was founded by Bill Bowerman, a track and field coach at the University of Oregon and his former student Phil Knight. They launched their first outlet in 1966 where they released their first Nike branded shoe in 1972. The brand went public 1980 and grew into the monster it still is today.
